Incorporation of geriatric assessment and management into oncological care improves treatment tolerance and patient centered outcomes for older people with cancer. Various models of care have been demonstrated to not only be efficacious, but also cost-effective. However, geriatric assessment is not routinely implemented into Australian cancer care, with limited access to geriatricians and geriatric services a commonly cited barrier. Cancer Australia’s newly released “Optimal Care Pathways for older people with cancer” upholds patient-centered, multidisciplinary and age-friendly care, including geriatric assessment to guide treatment decisions and supportive care interventions. As geriatricians it is critical we are involved in Geriatric Oncology Service development and delivery, given our expertise in interpreting complex psychosocial and medical factors into patient-centered decision-making and management.
